Alderley Edge in Bloom – adding a splash of colour to the village

19 Sep 2021

The inspiration for forming Alderley Edge In Bloom came from present Secretary Christine Munroe in 2016.  After helping organise the village Christmas lights switch on with very few helpers Christine decided to create a partnership of local residents who would regularly support local events.

Alongside other founding members of the group they decided to enter the Britain in Bloom competition and won a deserving Bronze medal.   From these early beginnings the group now has 8 committee members and over 50 volunteers of which over half of those regularly attend working parties.

Alderley In Bloom meet every Wednesday and Friday at 2pm at their Chorley Hall allotment site. Here they grow vegetables for the senior’s luncheon club which is held at the Methodist Church and also cut flowers for the Churches in the village.

On a Monday at 10 am they meet at the Station for an organised litter picking which helps keep the village clean and tidy.  Volunteers are always welcome and anyone interested should contact Leslie Cox, the group’s Chairman on 07774 488450.

The group relies on donations to keep the wooden planters and hanging baskets that brighten up the village fresh and seasonal.   Local businesses or individuals have generously donated over the years but anyone who would like to help with fundraising can contact Christine Munro of 07545 073706

Christine was born in Alderley Edge 83 years ago and after a short time away returned and moved into the house she was born in.   She worked for ICI at Alderley Park and her organisational skills have helped her raise money for events in the village throughout the years.   Christine not only helps add colour to Alderley Edge but still is a part of her Preserve and Gin companies that she set up and which her son now runs.   They recently won over 24 awards for their Riverside Spirits.

Alderley Edge in Bloom have plans to add to the Woodland Garden next to Waitrose and would also like to enter the Britain in Bloom competition for 2022.

Next time you are in the village stop and look at how wonderful the planters and woodland area look – all thanks to a hard working group of volunteers at Alderley Edge in Bloom
