My name is Thomas Barratt and I am currently in year 10 at Bramhall High School. In the summer of 2019, myself and a few others from the school will be travelling on a 4-week expedition to Borneo with CAMPS International to work on conservation and community projects. The expedition aims to make a real difference to the lives of the local community and wildlife.
Whilst there, we will take part in lots of community and clean up projects, such as building houses, planting trees, cleaning up beaches etc. throughout the whole of Borneo. We will be living and working alongside the locals in several different camps/villages as we travel around. There are lots of projects underway right now and much more still to be started, so we will be kept very busy!
However, the trip costs over £4000 which I am aiming to raise myself through means of working, fundraising events and sponsorships.
Of all the money I raise, over a third of this goes directly to the local community and conservation projects themselves in Borneo, with the rest of the money covering the cost of the trip itself, including travel, food and very basic accommodation for the 4 weeks that I am there. The money will be spent on purchasing materials, tools etc. required to carry out the projects and aid the community and wildlife in Borneo.
I’ve started contacting local businesses directly asking for sponsorship or donations of goods, services or discount vouchers that I can sell or offer as raffle prizes. I am grateful to Wendy from ‘I Love Bramhall’ who has given me the opportunity to write this article to spread the word of my expedition to more individuals and businesses through social media and by attending all the local events organised by them.
I have already started fundraising and have many more ideas. I’ve distributed leaflets around my area offering help for any odd jobs that need doing, and last week I held a Valentine’s Day cake sale in school, which was a big hit! I baked lots of Valentine’s Day themed treats and was able to sell them all in the space of 15 minutes. It was a successful first event and really helped to kickstart my fundraising journey.
I’ve set up a Fundraising page (www.fundrazr.com/thomasbarratt.borneo).
I still have a long way to go, and I hope that you can help me. I am looking for any financial help or donations you can offer to help me reach my goal. If you are a business looking for advertising, I can offer space on my promotional T-shirts and hoodies which will be worn at all events and of course the expedition, with plenty of pictures being taken and put on social media and the CAMPS International website.
I would be extremely grateful if you could follow my journey and share my progress, either by following my social media or spreading my cause through word of mouth. If you would like to help me reach my target, you can donate through my fundraising page or if you are a business with anything you can donate that I could potentially raffle, please do not hesitate to contact me either through email ([email protected]) or Facebook.
I can’t wait to get there and get involved, so please, anything you can do to help will go a long way.
Thank you in advance for all your support,
Thomas Barratt
