Good food – guaranteed: Bombay to Mumbai celebrates a year of success
10 Nov 2018Bramhall’s Bombay to Mumbai is celebrating a full-on first year in business, including some key achievements – most notably earning a place in the Good Food Guide 2019! I Love Bramhall spoke to owner Sandeep Gursahani to get the lowdown on the last 12 months and find out what’s coming up.
Situated among the shops on Fir Road, with free parking outside, Bombay to Mumbai occupies the perfect spot for a delicious meal just a few minutes’ walk away from the hustle and bustle of Bramhall’s high street. Over the past year, Sandeep and his business partner Donya have made great strides in establishing this authentic yet innovative Indian eatery as one of the area’s best.
Bramhall has welcomed Bombay to Mumbai warmly, Sandeep says, and in turn the restaurant has taken every step to ensure it’s done the village proud. These efforts have paid off, it seems – Bombay to Mumbai earned itself a mention in the Good Food Guide 2019, made it to the finals of the Stockport Business Awards 2018 in the best food and drink retailer category AND achieved the top standard in food hygiene this year – on the same day that Sandeep and his wife welcomed their baby into the world.
Sandeep’s background in hospitality has stood him in good stead. Having worked at the prestigious Taj Mahal and later ascending the ranks from bottom to top over ten years at Manchester Airport Marriott Hotel, Sandeep was previously the co-owner of a successful Indian restaurant in Cheadle Hulme. However, his heart was always set on opening up an eatery in Bramhall. When the premises on Fir Road became available, Sandeep wasted no time in putting in an offer just five minutes after viewing the property and quickly got to work on bringing Bombay to Bramhall.
With plans for a unique menu that combined traditional Mumbai curries with the best of Bombay street food, Sandeep’s concept was to recreate the food and culture of both old and modern India. Bombay to Mumbai also serves up a selection of dishes of its own creation, including the Lai Bhari Curry with chicken or lamb, Sharabi Chicken (chicken tossed in onion, tomato, bullet chilli, spices and white wine) and the Rumta Jogi (lamb koftas tossed in masala and spiced rum).
The food served at Bombay to Mumbai is made as it would be in India – there’s no watering down for British tastes, the food is completely authentic and the service second to none. A quick visit to TripAdvisor acts as a quick confirmation – Bombay to Mumbai sits comfortably within the top three restaurants in Stockport and has done for months.
Both Sandeep and Donya are passionate about what they do, with Sandeep handling the behind-the-scenes operations and Donya running the front of house. Customer service isn’t Donya’s only skill, however, she’s also a trained opera singer, having studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. Donya performs live at the restaurant on occasion, her last event was a complete sell out so keep an eye on Bombay to Mumbai’s social media pages for details of her next performance, planned for January!
A year after opening and Sandeep says he couldn’t have wished for better neighbours than the other businesses along the Fir Road strip, who have been friendly and helpful since the restaurant was established. Both Sandeep and Donya have got to know many of the local business owners and made some firm friends in Bramhall, getting involved in community events like the Duck Race – in fact, their entry for 2018 was named the Best Dressed Duck of the participating 165!
Bombay to Mumbai is big on community spirit, having donated hundreds of mixed bhajis for I Love Bramhall’s Big Free Tea Party event and dozens of vouchers for local charity events. Sandeep is also committed to lending a helping back home in India, too, and has raised hundreds of pounds for the Kerala flood victims through special events at the restaurant.
Bombay to Mumbai will be getting involved in the events of the festive season soon and has launched a special menu to celebrate. Comprising seven courses for just £29.95, the festive menu will be served at lunchtime on Christmas Day but is also proving popular among businesses booking their Christmas parties. Featuring a number of items not available on the main menu, the mouth-watering festive specials include Chickadoms (mini poppadoms topped with chicken tikka), spiced lentil soup, chicken, lamb or veg curry and a serving of traditional Christmas pudding with rabri (melted Indian ice cream).
If you’re passing early on a Saturday or Sunday, meanwhile, pop in and enjoy brunch from the brand new breakfast menu, which includes spicy Indian scrambled eggs and omelettes, savoury lentil doughnuts, steamed rice cakes and more. Of course, if you’d rather enjoy an evening meal, you can book a table, order an online takeaway to collect or download the app and order directly – home delivery will soon be offered.
