How Plumcake Café saved Christmas

23 Dec 2020
Christmas is a time for togetherness, but this year, things will be a bit different. In light of the recent government announcement, we won’t all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones – BUT, we can spend it with the familiar faces at Plumcake Café, who are opening to serve mince pies to the community and donate the proceeds to charity on Christmas Day.

The last-minute government decision to restrict Christmas gatherings means that many local families have had to change their plans at only a few days’ notice. On top of concerns about coronavirus transmission to elderly and vulnerable relatives, the latest announcement has led to Christmas being scaled down or even cancelled altogether for some households.

What should be the most wonderful time of the year is fast becoming something less merry and bright, but Anna, Kath and the team at Plumcake Café have stepped in to save the day with their own 11th hour announcement – and a much more welcome one it is, too.

In a wonderfully generous gesture and a true example of Christmas spirit, Plumcake Café have announced plans to open for a couple of hours on Christmas Day, giving residents who won’t be spending Christmas with their families the opportunity to mark the special occasion with some friendly faces – even if they aren’t family.

“A lot of our customers have told us they won’t be seeing family on Christmas Day this year, so we’ve decided to open from 10.30am -12.30pm so that they can see a friendly face,” the team have said. “We will be serving hot drinks and mince pies and donating any proceeds from the day to the Bramhall & Woodford Rotary Christmas charity.”

Mother and daughter duo Kath and Anna will heading up the two-hour event, supported by a team of volunteers including our very own founder Wendy with Ed and Mike from Ed’s Hair, so there will be plenty of people to chat to on Christmas morning at an appropriate distance.

Plumcake has long been a central community meeting point, offering delicious dishes cooked up by Kath, who – despite being in her 70s – continues to put her talents to good use for the community. From homely hotpots to gluten-free goodies, the Plumcake team caters for all tastes and delivers service with a smile.

The friendly, family-run café has been a lifeline for the older generation during lockdown, as well as for busy mums with young children and lots of other members of the community, too. It’s somewhere to grab a coffee to take on a walk, a place to pick up some tasty treats or a home-cooked meal for those who can’t cook themselves, or just somewhere to call in at for a break from being at home and to see some different faces.

The team are always happy to chat and their genuine care for our community is the epitome of what makes Bramhall such a special place to live. It’s a big thank-you from I Love Bramhall to the Plumcake team, who have stepped in to stamp out loneliness this festive season and save Christmas 2020, with all proceeds to a good cause. Spread the word so that none of our residents need be alone at this special time of year!
