I Love Hulme Hall Grammar School

22 Nov 2018

Hulme Hall Grammar School has been educating the young people of Bramhall and beyond ever since it was founded in 1928. I Love Bramhall met up with Marketing Manager Mandy O’Reilly and Interim Headteacher Philip Bradford to find out more.

Previously situated in Cheadle Hulme, the school’s current site was designed in 1910 for the specific purpose of accommodating a school. Until recently, the site was occupied by Hillcrest Grammar School, which closed in 2014. The former main school building – which is still in use – is magnificent, with features such as large stained glass windows and oak panelling making for a very special learning environment.

We should know – I Love Bramhall founder Wendy attended Hulme Hall herself in the not-too-distant past, recently giving an inspirational speech at Hulme Hall’s presentation evening at Stockport Plaza. You can check out what she had to say here.

While maintaining the building’s stunning original features, Hulme Hall is busy updating their modern sports and learning facilities. Just recently, the Pre-School playground was officially opened by the Mayor of Stockport Walter Brett – he even had a go on the slide!

Though the school moved to its current spot in Davenport last September, the pupils are already making the most of their new location. A group of budding gardeners have planted a flower bed in the nearby Cale Green Park, while another group regularly visits the local primary school to help out during playtime.

Giving back to the community is ingrained in Hulme Hall’s ethos and each year the students select a charity to fundraise for through bake sales, non-uniform days and more. Recently, one pupil even shaved her hair for the Little Princess Trust, raising more than £5,000 for the charity, which goes to show the kindness and compassion of the school community.

Hulme Hall

Proudly a ‘small school with a big heart’, Hulme Hall has a maximum of two-form entry per year group, with no more than 20 pupils in each class. This provides plenty of opportunity for one-to-one guidance and support, giving the school the family feel it has become known for.

Hulme Hall’s key focus is on celebrating the individual. The high standard of academic support was evidenced in last year’s GCSE results, which were well above the national average – 91% of pupils achieved a Level 4 grade or higher in Mathematics and English. Yet with the school’s drama, sport, art and music facilities, education here goes far beyond academia.

Speaking of sport, Hulme Hall has turned heads in the local area for their sporting achievements. One pupil plays lacrosse for England; another recently competed in his first amateur boxing match – and with everything from hockey to trampolining on offer at the school, there is something for all pupils to get involved in.

With regards to music, the school was the deserving winner of the Incorporated Society of Musicians Gold Award last year for its commitment to music in the curriculum. Drums, guitar and singing are just a few of the music lessons available at the school, and pupils can take part in musical theatre productions of everything from Shakespeare to Bugsy Malone, too.

All that learning needs good food to fuel it, so Hulme Hall provides the very best in locally-sourced meals for pupils from Pre-School through to Year 11. Their caterers, CH&CO, hold a Royal Warrant, even catering for HM the Queen!

Hulme Hall invests a great deal into helping each pupil excel in all aspects of the curriculum, yet they also provide the support and knowledge to help them make the transition to the next step of their educational journey. The school works with local colleges to hold talks and mock interviews, ensuring every child who leaves Hulme Hall is equipped with the skills they need to take on the world.
