I LOVE 4th Bramhall Scouts Group

In Bramhall, we’re rightly proud of our tight-knit community, which is enriched by the many groups that meet in and around the village. Among these important community groups is 4th Bramhall Scout Group, providing action, adventure and life skills support for the village’s younger residents.

Although relatively well hidden down St Michael’s Avenue, 4th Bramhall Scouts Group has been around for longer than you might realise; established in 1961 by Alf Moisten along with sponsors St Michael’s Parish Church just over the road, the group is run by Group Scout Leader Jon Wood, who himself attended Cubs here approximately 30 years ago and never left.

Recently appointed group chairperson Koralia Kubowicz, who moved up to the area a year ago, also has a Scouting background; in her native Poland, Koralia’s family was actively involved in the organisation, her mother in particular. Now that her son Vincent is old enough to join the group, Koralia, in her role as group chair, is hoping that her experienced background – coupled with years of shrewd managerial experience – will help raise the profile of 4th Bramhall Scout Group.

Welcoming children and young people aged from six to 18, Scouts meets on a Thursday. It’s Cubs on a Wednesday and the Beavers and Explorers Sections meet on a Tuesday. The St Michael’s Avenue base serves around 80 youngsters across the different age brackets but there’s always room for more – 4th Bramhall Scout Group is on the lookout for new recruits, as well as adult volunteers. Parents and community members are invited to get involved and volunteer when they can, there’s no week-on-week obligation and volunteers enjoy the sessions just as much as the young people!

I Love Bramhall has been lucky enough to have firsthand experience of the Scout Group; founder Wendy served on the executive committee at 4th Bramhall Scout Group for a period of time and her son attended the group for many years, enjoying the variety of activities on offer. From crafts and fire-building to cycling and cookery classes, there’s always something different to try out.

The Scout Association at large is committed to supporting the continuing development of its young members and 4th Bramhall Scout Group is no exception; Jon and the Leaders have made it their mission to teach the group skills they won’t necessarily learn in school. Encouraging young people to learn through what they do, undertake new challenges, behave responsibly and contribute to society in a positive way, the group offers a friendly welcome and an opportunity to socialise, have fun and grow in a variety of ways.

Within the local area, 4th Bramhall Scout Group regularly connects with other Scout groups on activities, as well as getting together on camping expeditions. Next year, the Scouts & Explorers are planning an exciting trip to Switzerland, where members will have the opportunity to meet native Scout groups, establish friendships and experience the local culture.

The group is also in the process of organising a couple of big events for later in the year, which will provide vital funds to safeguard the group’s future and also to raise some much-needed cash to cover the cost of replacing the ancient fuse box – an estimated outlay of £2,000.

Expect to see a lot more of 4th Bramhall Scout Group in the near future; the group is planning to get involved in local events within the community and establish ongoing partnerships with Bramhall schools, putting on demonstrations so that other young locals can see for themselves just how much fun being a Scout can be.
