Butcher and Barlow LLP – the Big Solicitors on Your Doorstep

11 Aug 2020

Our local village solicitors, Butcher and Barlow LLP, are an integral part of a much larger firm, and a business with over 130 years of history. Their Bramhall office has been open thirteen years now and that’s true testament to the success and the ethos of this partnership. It’s also very reassuring for anyone needing the services of expert solicitors.

Lawyers with History

Butcher & Barlow LLP was established in the late nineteenth century. Continued success and glowing recommendations have seen the operation expand to include ten offices and employ over 160 people. Law is a profession where practices often merge and expand. Often, this can cause a loss of identity but that’s simply not been the case with Butcher & Barlow LLP.  They remain proud of their name, along with the high standards and identity that are the same now as they were back in 1887.

Butcher & Barlow LLP took over Bramhall’s Taylor, Kirkman and Mainprice in 2007. The office is on Moss Lane, right by Piccolino, in the very heart of the village. They deliver a local law service but with a big firm back-up, with other legal experts always on call from across Lancashire and Cheshire. This is a local firm – but with the size to provide an approachable expert in every legal field. The firm of solicitors has passed through four generations of the same family and is rightly proud of that rich history and genuine family ethos.

Partner Robert Morris, who specialises in commercial and residential property, probate, Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney, is well known in the village.  He’s lived here in Bramhall for nearly 30 years where he’s a stalwart of Bramhall Lane Lawn Tennis Club (of whom Butcher & Barlow are a proud sponsor). He was a Partner of Taylor Kirkman & Mainprice, before they merged with Butcher & Barlow.

Over his years as a Bramhall solicitor, he’s acted for a wide range of clients from first-time buyers to large scale property developers and has a large client base. He’s a trusted professional adviser to different generations of many local families. He also chaired Bramhall Round Table and continues to fundraise for local good causes such as The Wellspring and The Together Trust. Believe it or not, he achieves this as an Elvis impersonator! Recently he’s taken up golf again and is just as good as he ever was, which, he says, is ‘not very’.

Justin Kelly

Justin Kelly is a partner who heads up the Firm’s Corporate and Commercial team. He’s built up relationships locally over many years, practising as an employment lawyer for much of his working life.  Justin has led on many high-value transactions including multi-million-pound acquisitions and disposals.  Justin deals with a variety of commercial transactions and with a focus on employment matters. He is also a Notary Public, one of the few in the area able to certify foreign documents for use in any legal jurisdiction in the world

Nicola Wingfield

Nicola Wingfield is a a specialist family lawyer who deals with a variety of matters, both legal aid and privately funded. Based at the Bramhall office, she works across Manchester and Cheshire. She is a skilled advocate, working across various family matters including divorce, dissolution of Civil Partnerships, the separation of unmarried couples and dealing with the resulting financial matters. In 2016, after completion of a rigorous assessment process, Nicola was accredited to The Law Society Children Law Scheme and now represents children, as well as parents and other family members, in Court proceedings concerning their welfare.

Rachel Martin

Rachel Martin, a commercial property specialist with almost 20 years’ experience joined Butcher & Barlow from another firm in 2018.  She has lived in Bramhall for many years and, after working at national law firms in Manchester, started practising in the village back in 2014. Rachel tells us: “My three children all attended Queensgate Primary School and I love practising in the community in which I live.  Bramhall manages to retain its bustling, village atmosphere whilst benefiting greatly from its proximity to Manchester and Stockport and I enjoy acting for businesses located in the village and local residents, as well as working with businesses based further afield, who appreciate the ability to access specialist commercial property and development advice locally.

There is no doubt that the events of the few last months have brought our community even closer together and, as we emerge from lockdown, it is great to see the support being shown for local businesses as they re-open.  The mantra ‘Shop Local’ has never felt more important and I look forward to working with local residents and businesses as we navigate the coming months together.” A woman after our own heart.

Matthew Watson

Matthew Watson is a Solicitor specialising in both residential property and private client work which includes Will writing, preparing Powers of Attorney and administration of estates. He prides himself on his client-friendly approach and building up a relationship with clients from the outset.

“It is always a pleasure to see the matter resolved successfully in the hope that one day that client will return for another legal issue.”

Rowena Wilkinson

Rowena Wilkinson is a Commercial Property solicitor based in Bramhall. She qualified into Commercial Property in 2008, having trained at a national law firm in Manchester. After taking some time to raise her young family she returned to the area 2 years ago and joined Butcher and Barlow in October 2018.
