I LOVE Eds Hair Bramhall
10 Jul 2018Eds Hair: Bringing Bramhall to life, Brazilian style. It’s been three years since Eds hairdressers opened in the village and in that time, owners Ed Mascarenhas and Mike Messenger have well and truly bedded in to Bramhall.
We met up with the talented twosome to find out how Eds has captured our hearts with so much more than their hairdressing skills alone.

Eds’ story is compellingly romantic: more than a decade ago, Mike travelled out to Brazil to stay with an acquaintance, Ed, for a holiday. On meeting, the two hit it off; the holiday turned into a partnership and shortly after Ed moved over to the UK, where the couple built their business – and their lives – together.
Setting up in Salford initially, the pair recall how they would drive past the Bramhall salon when it belonged to Toni & Guy, with Ed longing to call the place his own. As fate would have it, his PA spotted the salon when it became vacant, called Ed with the news and the rest, as they say, is history.
On the surface, Mike and Ed may seem like opposites; however, Ed’s flamboyance and passion are complemented by Mike’s measured approach, striking a special balance. For all their differences, the pair share a common commitment to community, with both citing giving back as vitally important. Not only are they extremely supportive members of Bramhall’s business community, Eds also sponsors Bramhall 4th Scouts, donates to charities including the Bramhall Together Trust and gets behind local events like the Bramhall Duck Race.
Based in the very centre of the village on Bramhall Lane South, Eds is slap-bang in the middle of the action – and being at the forefront is a position that Mike and Ed are more than happy to occupy. One of the first salons in the country to offer the Brazilian blowout and hair reconstruction services, Eds has been at cutting edge of hairdressing innovation since day one and is committed to maintaining their excellent reputation.
A Schwarzkopf salon, Eds trains regularly in new techniques to ensure their staff’s skills are up to date. Ed and Mike are supported by their capable stylists Charlotte, Denise, Marco, Paige and Francesca, apprentice Bronia, Saturday girl Natasha and PA Luana. As well as the abilities of their employees, Eds credits their excellent relationship with Schwarzkopf as key to the salon’s success. Committed to breakthrough hairdressing, ongoing support and regular training, Schwarzkopf’s own values align perfectly with Eds’.
In fact, the salon was recently chosen to be among just 100 across the country to host the BigHairDo event in association with Creative Head magazine and Layered Online. What’s more, it was the ONLY salon honoured to have the official press party along for the event. With a Brazilian dancer in tow, a seemingly endless supply of prosecco, representatives from local businesses and celebs in attendance – including original member of the Real Housewives of Cheshire cast Magali Gorre – it was a party to remember, spilling out on to the street to the bemusement of passers-by.
It’s Eds’ lively, fun personality that really brings Bramhall to life – there’s just nowhere else quite like it in the village, and this gives the salon a unique appeal. With staff speaking five languages – including German and Portuguese – and decades of experience across Afro, Asian and Caucasian hair types, Eds brings together a diverse clientele from across Bramhall and beyond.
Despite being particularly popular with footballers, many of whom visit on recommendation, and counting several celebrities among their customer base, Eds remains down to earth, offering the same warm welcome to all clients – regardless of status. Ed himself is no stranger to the class struggle; growing up in Brazil, he remembers having little in the way of money or possessions. Combining skill with sheer determination – and a helping hand from fate – Ed has transformed his life.
With several TV appearances under his belt, Ed was also featured in Brazilian magazine Viva Beleza magazine last year – a far cry from the obscurity of his youth. “I grew up poor – we had nothing. Now, my salon is like my castle,” he says. “I believe that it’s possible to achieve anything through hard work and honesty.”
