I LOVE Em’s Easy Eco

Being more conscious of the environment doesn’t have to be difficult – in fact, it can be easy, as one of our newest businesses is proving.

I Love Bramhall spoke to Emily Mee, owner of Em’s Easy Eco, to find out how some small acts by enough people can add up to big benefits for our planet.

Take a stroll through Bramhall precinct and you can’t miss the rustic wooden sign and beautiful, vine-clad window of Em’s Easy Eco. Step through the door, and (even with the thickest of masks) you’re hit by the smell of spices – just one of the refill options available at Bramhall’s very own eco store.

At the tender age of 24, local resident Emily Mee became a businesswoman overnight when she made the decision to open Bramhall’s first refill shop. Growing up locally, Emily went travelling for a year after school, worked in various jobs – everything from hospitality to car finance – and spent time studying occupational therapy at university before taking the plunge and setting up her own business.

But Emily’s passion for the environment actually began in childhood, when she was seven or eight and became aware of the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. She wrote to then Prime Minister Tony Blair, expressing her concerns, and received a response – but it wasn’t enough to put her mind at ease.

Fast-forward 15 years and the issues of climate change, pollution and deforestation are still hot topics. We’re increasingly aware of our impact on the environment but the damage is now so great that many of us feel powerless to do anything of great significant. And yet, Emily says, if enough of us take action – however small – we can bring about change.  

It’s not about perfection – for most of us, being completely plastic-free, vegan and ethical with every purchase just isn’t practical – it’s about enough of us doing what we can, however imperfectly, that counts. And for us Bramhall residents, this is the place to start.

Bring along your own container to Em’s Easy Eco and fill it with all kinds of eco-friendly items, from plastic-free toothpaste and handmade soaps to sustainably made washing up liquid and laundry detergent, then simply weigh and pay.

There are little gifts to browse – including candles and hand-painted decorations – and plenty of food items, too, whether you want to stock up on flour, pulses, tea, coffee or other everyday essentials, like… chocolate-covered honeycomb… yum!

Most of the products in stock are vegan, save for the odd item like the beeswax food wraps and the refillable chocolate-covered treats, although the vegan chocolate bars – having all sold out – are currently on order!

Em’s Easy Eco is open six days a week, closing on Wednesdays for Emily to rest and get ready for the week ahead. The shop opens from 10am until 5pm every day except Sunday, when opening hours are 11am until 4pm. There’s hand sanitiser by the door, face coverings are requested and the number of customers in the shop at any one time are limited to four or five for everyone’s safety during the pandemic.

Many of our local businesses are closed right now but let’s not forget those that remain open and need our support to survive. Pop in, or, if you’d prefer why not shop from the comfort of your own home via the online store?
