I LOVE Modiste
24 Jan 2017In the heart of Bramhall within the Village Square lies a gorgeous shop called Modiste.
It’s run by Sue Day, who we met on a cold January morning, warmed up by the welcome she gave us.
Sue moved to Bramhall from Wilmslow when she was seven and went to Moss Hey and Bramhall High (always a favourite for our readers!) After high school she studied Fashion at college in Ashton-under-Lyne and it was while she was still there that she set up a clothing business along with her sister.
The girls started taking their collections down to London and as the number of orders increased Sue ended up leaving college in order to help with manufacturing. At the same time, the sisters started selling their collections to a shop in Bramhall – Shop One (now Mobitech). With Shop One’s owner, Kul Cuthbert, they started another business called Posh Frocks. Considering that Sue was still only a teenager at this point she clearly had some entrepreneurial talent.
A number of their Posh Frocks creations featured in the fashion press – one of theirs was on the cover of the first ever BBC Clothes Show Magazine – and Sue still has copies of these in her shop, ask for them next time you pop in! Following Posh Frocks Sue held various positions within the fashion industry including a CMT service (cut, make and trim) until a family came along and raising three kids became a greater priority.
Eventually Modiste became Sue’s life. In 2008 she opened the shop in Stockport which traded for three years before relocating to Bramhall where it has gone from strength to strength. Sue also became involved with ‘Bramhall Together Trust’, helping to organise events in the Village as she knows how important it is to have a strong community.
Having been around Bramhall for so long, Sue has noticed how Bramhall has developed a sophisticated late-night culture and Modiste has hosted many fashion shows at venues such as Napa (now Yardbird), The Bubble Room and Turquoise – all of which Sue frequents socially too, although of late she has been spotted having a post work drink with her father-in-law (who use to have David Day chemists in the village) in Mercato!

What do Modiste do? What makes Sue different?
Sue offers a Made to Measure service clothing as well as selling her bought-in collections. When we spoke to her, she had a number of ‘made to measure’ outfits on the go which she works on in her first floor studio. Much of this work is wedding related but she is open to making anything. A tremendous amount of care and attention goes into this bespoke service, she makes everything from scratch, makes the pattern herself and takes the utmost care in every step along the way. These skills are also useful for those buying off the rails downstairs, as she regularly does alterations on things bought in the shop – often free of charge – to ensure the perfect fit.
Twice a year, Sue journeys down to London to see the new season’s collections and check out any interesting new labels. Everything in Modiste is chosen personally by her, which is a wonderful, unique touch to her business. Sue looks for brands that are exciting and which offer something different. Pop into the shop to see what she’s all about and you will definitely be impressed. You’ll receive a personal service and she’ll make sure you find the garment to suit you.
