I Love Queensgate Tennis Club

Tucked away in a leafy residential area a short walk from Bramhall Village, Queensgate Tennis Club is one of Bramhall’s best kept secrets. With its peaceful surroundings and the usual hum of traffic replaced by the chirping of birds, it’s hard to believe the tennis club is just five minutes away from the bustle of the village centre.

I Love Bramhall met up with Sue, the club’s chairperson, on a sunny afternoon last week to learn more about this longstanding community resource, where tennis has been played for more than 100 years.

Priding itself on its family-friendly ethos, Queensgate Tennis Club offers ‘tennis for all’. With coaching for every age, wheelchair accessibility and a clubhouse to relax in post-game, the club is a welcoming retreat for members of the community, whatever their ability level. Sue herself has been an avid tennis player for many years and a member of the club’s committee for11, so she’s mastered the balance between fun and fitness.

The club is the proud home of some very successful junior and adult teams alike, with the juniors winning 14 titles last year. Of the eight senior teams, meanwhile, the first men’s and women’s teams are the only Bramhall club players currently occupying top spots in Cheshire North East league’s premier division. Standards of play, coaching and safety are so high at Queensgate that the club was the first in the area to achieve the Lawn Tennis Association’s (LTA) Clubmark status; Queensgate has subsequently continued to achieve the high standards set by the LTA year-on-year ever since.

This success comes as no surprise, with full-time coach Darren providing excellent team, group and individual training on the floodlit AstroTurf and artificial clay playing courts. All ages and abilities are welcome, with new senior members receiving three complimentary group coaching sessions, so anyone can have a go – the only strings attached are those on the racquet.

The club is also used by a number of local schools; pupils from Hursthead, Queensgate, Moss Hey and Cheadle Hulme School all attend for coaching. Out of school, parents and carers can sit in the sun and enjoy a cool drink while their little one brushes up on their skills at a training session, or retire to a bench after playing a game of their own. For the cooler and wetter days, the clubhouse is the place to be when not on the court, with a licensed bar, modern kitchen area, comfy sofas and free Wi-Fi to keep visitors entertained.

Yet tennis isn’t all there is to do on the Queensgate Sports Club site. There’s Queensgate Bowling Club with a lush green lawn for games of bowls, Queensgate Snooker Club with its regal-looking snooker room and a large events space that hosts classes such as baby ballet, yoga and pilates. In addition, the three kitchens, abundance of space and safe atmosphere make the club a perfect venue for celebrations – the entire building is available for hire for all sorts of events, from birthday parties and anniversaries to work dos with a twist.

The tennis club is run solely by volunteers and the community feel is immediately noticeable to all who enter. Members enjoy a give-and-take relationship and a feeling that the club is very much their own. It’s a people-orientated club, with the social side of tennis being a key element of the club’s enduring success. American Tournaments are held on Tuesday nights – a round robin competition that is as light-hearted or competitive as you like and a sure-fire way to brighten up the start of the week.

Younger members are also well catered for, with camps over Easter, Whit and the summer holidays, as well as Junior Club Nights on Fridays in term time – an ideal opportunity to make friends while learning a new skill or improving an existing hobby.
