Nikki Brown – Sticky Fingers

6 Nov 2013

A fun-loving foodie with permanently sticky fingers. Nikki Brown was brought up in Bramhall, Cheshire and now lives here with her husband and two children.

What is your main passion in life?

I would happily admit I am a food geek. It’s all about enjoying and celebrating food. My family nearly as mad about it as I am which is no surprise as much of our family life is based in the kitchen.

I am passionate about the high street, and driving business back to local shops. This has inspired my interest in food so much that I started my own blog, 3 years ago which now has a large following alongside my Facebook page and Twitter.

Why Sticky Fingers?

It’s not just about eating good food, it’s about where it is sourced and how it is prepared.  It was whilst my children were little that my interest in food became even more important; I just wanted to be sure that what I was feeding them was not only tasty but nutritious as well. I learnt a lot from my own personal research, and from there simply wanted to help others get the most out of their food. I am a huge believer in getting kids interested in food by involving them as much as possible.  I love passing on my skills and top tips, hence my change in career from Art teacher to Food teacher!

Do you mix business and pleasure?

My first love was art, and after finishing my Fine Art degree at the University of Central England, I qualified as a teacher at MMU, and spent 10 years teaching in a Tameside secondary school. After having my children, my priorities changed and I began working more locally at Bramhall High School whilst developing my interest in food writing.  As well as my writing, I began to teach courses on how to cook healthy and interesting dishes to adults within adult education classes in various settings around Stockport. Teaching cookery to adults with learning difficulties is another area I currently work in. I also teach privately. Anyone from a complete beginner, to  teenagers on their way to University leaving their mum’s cooking for the first time, to men who want to impress their girlfriends in a new way!

I’m a firm believer in using ingredients that are currently in season and often use this in my teaching. It is not only the tastiest way to cook, but the most economical.

Family Life in Bramhall

My family is immersed in Bramhall life. Both my children attend Pownall Green Primary School. My son is a member of the 4th Bramhall Scouts and of Queensgate Tennis Club. I can’t sing their praises enough. My son competes regionally and the tennis club have been there to support and coach him all the way. Whilst my daughter’s sights are set firmly on the stage or screen, attending Characters stage school, she also plays tennis at Queensgate tennis club, dances at the Fiona Watson dance school and enjoys horse riding in Poynton.

What’s so special about Bramhall?

Bramhall is unique. Unlike many other villages and high streets its emphasis is on independent businesses. Whenever I visit friends  I notice their high streets are full of chains and faceless businesses. There are not many villages where you still get butchers, greengrocers, bakers and fantastic restaurants as well as your high street stores like Costa and Boots all in one place; that is Bramhall.

We are lucky that we live in a community that has a buzz and a diverse range of activities. There are community groups for all ages, abilities and aptitudes! I would never live anywhere else.  Many of my friends like myself, grew up here and left to see the world swearing ‘never to return’! However the lure of grandparents, great community, excellent schools and lifestyle  proved too tempting. It really is a great place to live.

What’s your favourite shop in Bramhall?

Bramhall Bakery. It ticks all my boxes.  A real artisan bakers. They produce an excellent array of bread, cakes and pastries. They are creative, passionate about their produce and listen to their customers.

In a nutshell why do you love Bramhall?

Fantastic businesses (which we MUST support BTW), great community spirit, and a happy lifestyle. What’s not to love!
