The Railway Nursery – Makaton Friendly

The Railway Nursery is celebrating as we have been recognised by The Makaton Charity and awarded ‘Makaton Friendly’ accreditation. The Makaton friendly scheme aims to recognise organisations that use Makaton sign language in a simple way to make Makaton users feel welcome and included.

“Here at The Railway Nursery we have worked hard to train our staff in Makaton sign language. We use Makaton sign throughout our nursery to support our youngest babies up to oldest pre- school children. All children regardless of their age and stage of development use both sign and speech to develop their outstanding communication. Makaton helps children to express themselves and communicate effectively from a very young age. Sign is part of our day; we sing and sign, we speak and sign and we use Makaton symbols to support our practice. Our staff, parents and children all love Makaton”. A parent whose child attends The Railway Nursery said

“Staff across the nursery are Makaton trained and sign with my child and the other children throughout the day. This has enabled my child to communicate well both with staff and her friends, allowing her to participate fully in daily activities. Signing is coupled with the use of Makaton symbols, which are visible throughout nursery and are consistently used during learning activities to support children’s understanding and development. My child is happy and confident while at nursery and we’re delighted with how her communication has progressed over the last 18 months. This wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic support we have received from The Railway team.”

“The parents loved attending our Makaton workshop, recently delivered by our nursery manager to a group of keen parents and carers. During this session, the group learnt simple signs and learnt how to develop communication through Makaton sign language. This workshop built parents confidence in signing and encouraged parents to continue communicating in this manner with their children at home” 

Having recently been awarded Outstanding across all areas by Ofsted, The Railway Nursery latest achievement of Makaton Friendly Accreditation demonstrates how The Railway Nursery are continuing to go from strength to strength!!!!!
