Mr Whippy Delivers Smiles in Cheadle and Bramhall for Ice Cream Month

19 Jul 2022

Everyone loves Mr Whippy, and residents at two local care homes were delighted to receive a surprise visit from the ice cream man to celebrate National Ice Cream Month.

With its distinctive jingle playing, the brightly coloured ice cream van visited Cheadle Manor on Stockport Road in Cheadle and Bramhall Manor on Hardy Drive in Bramhall, both part of the New Care group, delighting residents and carers alike by serving classic Mr Whippy 99s in cones or cartons complete with raspberry sauce and a Cadbury Flake.

A real conversation starter, the visit from Mr Whippy had residents reminiscing about their many fond memories of the ice cream van from days gone by.

“The music from the ice cream van would be the best sound ever,” said Norma Holland, “I would rush to my parents for money to get one, it was so delicious,” and “It was music to my ears when I heard the ice cream man, the joy it brought to the neighbourhood was fantastic,” said Keith Fitzgerald, both residents at Bramhall Manor.

Jean Monnington, a resident at Cheadle Manor, added: “I can remember an Italian family having the carts near where I lived; they called around the streets and came to your door!  They didn’t have freezers then. It was kept in a big tubs surrounded by ice to keep it cool. It was and always has been a treat.”

Home manager at Bramhall Manor, Rebecca Murphy, added: “We all have memories of the ice cream van and it was a lovely surprise to be able to talk and share these memories and enjoy a delicious treat during Ice Cream Month.

The visits were part of a wider activity taking in all 10 of New Care’s award winning care homes across the UK during National Ice Cream Month (July).  Covering just over 450 miles in two days, the van visited Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Nottinghamshire serving up more than 600 ice creams.
