Christmas tree collection in aid of St Ann’s Hospice
22 Dec 2019With the festive season just around the corner, a charity is already preparing to make the process of recycling real Christmas trees easier for local residents while at the same time raising money for people in Greater Manchester with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.
JustHelping, a national charity founded in Prestbury is organising Christmas tree collections throughout Greater Manchester to raise money for charities in the area including St Ann’s Hospice.
A team of volunteers will be out in force to collect trees between Friday 10th and Sunday 12th January 2020, and people can register their tree at www.charityxmastreecollection.com and make a voluntary donation.
Chris Syddall, owner of Famous Henry’s, comments:
There’s a group of us now that do fundraising events together, we call ourselves Team Hesketh as it’s our local pub. We’re all businessmen motivated by the same thing, to try to make a difference in our own way. We’ve helped out with the collection for the last three years and I also sponsor leaflets promoting the scheme through my business, Famous Henry’s barbers. We all get together to pitch in, another member of the team, who runs Movers Transport, provides a couple of vans for the collection and we cover Bramhall, Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme.
Last year JustHelping collected 2,234 trees, all of which were shredded into chippings to be used locally in parks and sports clubs. The initiative raised £24,800 for St Ann’s Hospice and £4,300 was also donated to the following local charities as elected by the volunteers helping with the collection such as:
- Manchester Cathedral Country Home, Romiley
- Kinder Mountain Rescue
- Chelwood Food Bank
- Beechwood Cancer Care
- Francis House – £950
- The Christie – £350
- Seashell Trust – £150
- Manchester Children’s Hospital – £400
This year the charity’s team of volunteers will be collecting trees in SK2, SK3, SK4, SK5, SK6, SK7, SK8, M20, M21, M22, M27, M33, WA14 and WA15.
Clare Hinton, JustHelping’s Chief Executive, explained:
“We are hoping to be able to help even more people recycle their Christmas trees this year and boost the amount of money that we raise for charities like St Ann’s.
“We are always bowled over by the support the Christmas tree collection scheme receives from local residents and our amazing volunteers, who see it as the perfect opportunity to come together and give something back to the community when the festivities are over.
Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said:
“Thanks so much to the JustHelping team, their volunteers, and of course the people of Greater Manchester who register their Christmas tree for collection and make a voluntary donation to the hospice.
“It’s support like this that enables us to continue to make a real difference to the lives of our patients and their families and words really can’t express how much we appreciate it.”
