I Love Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club
2 Jul 2019A humble local sports club on Grove Lane, Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club has been a steeple of the local cricket scene for over 130-years.
While the women’s FIFA Football World Cup campaign in France has grabbed plenty of headlines, the UK-based cricket World Cup has provided cricket enthusiasts with services of excitement, whilst earning a host of brand-new devotees in the process. Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club provides an opportunity for cricket fans to satisfy their appetite for the game, whilst representing a competitive side who also promotes the importance of enjoying the game and the social elements that run parallel with playing sport within a team.
Ed Lindsey is a Committee Member at Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club and also plays and coaches at the club, who offer a host of opportunities for both seasoned and new cricketers:
“We have four adult teams; three play on a Saturday, the other team play on a Sunday. We also have an over-40s side who play on a Wednesday, as well as a fantastic junior set up. We have ninety kids over the age of eight, who either play for the under 9’s, under 11’s or under 13’s. For the first time, we’ve also introduced a girls’ team.”
Such has been the exposure of cricket over the course of the summer, the sport has enjoyed a spike in popularity. Players who are interested in joining a team will be delighted to hear that Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club welcome new additions to their host of teams, as explained by Ed:
“We’re permanently on the lookout for new players. For any senior players who are interested, we have net sessions on a Thursday at 6:15 pm, so anyone is more than welcome to come down and get involved!”
While there may be some people who are keen to begin playing cricket with little experience of the game, this is not something that Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club view as a weakness. The club actively encourage newcomers to the sport to head down to one of the training sessions to pick up a bat and a ball and have a fantastic time embracing one of the nation’s most-loved sports, as highlighted by Ed: “We’re constantly promoting the club on Facebook and Twitter, so anybody who wants to join the set-up at any standard, boy or girl, old or young, please contact the club and we’ll be more than happy to steer you the right way.”
When discussing the club’s impressive drive to encourage young people to play cricket, Ed was evidently proud of Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club’s growing contingency of youth amongst the ranks:
“I’d go as far to say that Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club is the most pro-active, local cricket club in terms of juniors. Currently, there are in excess of ninety youngsters representing the club, from the age of 8 and above.”
Cricket is a fantastic opportunity for children to meet new friends during the summer months and training for the youth teams is underway. The club’s junior team is run by Stuart Small, with junior training open to over 8’s on Fridays.
The sport is due to undergo an exciting new era, with a whole host of events pencilled into the cricketing calendar. Ed provided more information and discussed how Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club hopes to benefit from the upcoming schedule:
“2019 is a big year for cricket for three reasons: Firstly, the World Cup is taking place, and England have been playing a very exciting brand of cricket. After that, the highly-anticipated Ashes series against Australia will be taking place and everyone loves to get involved with that. Next year, a new competition, ‘The Hundred’ is being broadcast by the BBC. We anticipate that these three events will have a great impact on the popularity of cricket. Therefore, there will hopefully be more people who will want to join us to pursue their interest in the sport.”
Amongst his responsibilities at the Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club, Ed Lindsey is responsible for providing and handling sponsorship opportunities, with the likes of Papa John’s Pizza sponsoring the club’s playing shirts, and Chrome Motors providing sponsorship for training tops.
In collaborating with the club from a sponsorship perspective, companies not only support the local sporting community but also gain invaluable exposure when marketing business services. Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club is a community club that promotes the philosophy of enjoying the positives of sporting life. An added bonus is that on the pitch, the club’s sides are enjoying a sustained period of success, competing admirably throughout each league. Ed described the current feats of the club’s players further:
“We’re currently midway through the season and things are going really well. The first-team, in particular, are doing really well and are top-of-the-table, while the second-team are battling for promotion. The third-team is enjoying a steady season, the fourth-team are in the top-three, while the over 40’s are top of their league, as is the under 13’s in the High Peak league.”
