I LOVE the Garam Massala, Cheadle Hulme
1 Jun 2016The Garam Massala is one of the best – and the longest-established – Indian Restaurants in the area. Established in 1995, this family run Indian restaurant has long had a reputation for excellent food, superb service and incredible value.
I Love Cheadle Hulme popped in one evening this week – and will definitely be going back. The food tastes every bit as good as it looks!
Those who’ve lived in Cheadle Hulme as long as I have – or longer – will remember when that unit used to be a travel agent. Saleem tells me he and his Uncle, Rashid, had always wanted to set up a restaurant, and as they’d lived in Cheadle Hulme a long time, saw the unit and knew it was for them. Thus the Garam Massala was born! It wasn’t easy at first – but then, nothing good ever is. Back in 1995 Cheadle Hulme village was a much quieter place – there was no Waitrose or Asda, no Platform Five, Chiverton Tap or John Millington. In the nineties, most of us headed to Cheadle or Didsbury for a night out.
One advantage was that the Garam Massala was Cheadle Hulme’s only Indian restaurant. There is more competition now, with Indian restaurants in Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme, but it is testament to the Garam’s quality and value that they continue to thrive. Back in 1995, Saleem and Rashid used leaflets and word of mouth to spread the word, as well as organising charity nights and supporting our local schools. It helps that there’s plenty of free parking around, including on Warren Road, immediately opposite. That five star hygiene rating is always reassuring, too.
Fantastic Food
The authentic Indian food in the Garam Massala has always been really good and if anything seems to be getting better! There’s so much choice – both for curry connoisseurs and the less adventurous amongst us. From the everyday kormas, tikkas and passandas up to a traditionally hotter Madras and Vindaloo and everything in between. There are also vegetarian options, a seafood selection and a mouth-watering choice from the Tandoor. All of the Garam Massala’s Signature Dishes are sure to whet the appetite, too – Tandoori King Prawn Masala, Garlic Chilli Chicken or Bombay Style Madras, anyone? Of course the Naan breads are all delicious, as are the starters and appetisers. If you aren’t hungry when you walk in you soon will be, once the aromas of those delicious fresh spices start wafting about!
Neither does the wine list disappoint. The Garam Massala has an impressive selection of good value house wines as well as a comprehensive list of red, white, rosé and sparkling. From a fresh and crisp sauvignon blanc to a mellow Australian Shiraz, as well as a decent Prosecco and Cava, not to mention Moet et Chandon Champagne. For the lager aficionados, there’s Cobra and Kingfisher on draught and several bottled beers and ciders. Of course, there’s also a good range of soft drinks – and whiskies, sherries, aperitifs and liqueurs.

Saleem and Rashid love Cheadle Hulme. As they say, we have a lovely village and fabulous schools – but not too crowded like Didsbury. Cheadle Hulme station is handy, and they love Waterhouses and Pimlotts. The Garam Massala is now something of a Cheadle Hulme fixture, too.
Cheadle Hulme – and the Garam Massala – have everything you need for a great night out. There’s no need to travel to and Indian restaurant in Cheadle or bars in Didsbury any more – it’s all right here, in the heart of Cheadle Hulme village.
