I LOVE Whispers Hair Design, Cheadle Hulme – Call in and See Why!

29 Nov 2016

Sue, the owner of Whispers in Cheadle Hulme, is Cheadle Hulme through-and-through. Whispers has been a Cheadle Hulme fixture, right there on Station Road, for nearly 25 years. Sue tells me there’ll definitely be some sort of Silver celebration to mark the occasion in February!

Whispers has recently undergone a stunning transformation and looks absolutely amazing. With Sue’s typically hard work, it seemed to be achieved in record time and the Grand Reopening was a fantastic event. There’s now much more room – eight chairs and three backwashes – as well as a new kitchen and loo. The new door – actually at the front, this time – makes all the difference. A world away from when Sue opened in 1992 – using dining chairs and kitchen worktops! Back then, we still had Terry’s news along the same row of shops, and there was considerably less traffic.

Sue began her hairdressing career in 1979 and worked with another Cheadle Hulme fixture, Oranges, for eight years so she’s exceptionally experienced as well as talented. She built up her own client base at Oranges, working incredibly hard and not having a holiday for three years. It wasn’t always easy – and certainly building up the new business from scratch at Whispers was always going to be a challenge. Sue’s risen to that challenge and gone beyond. Whispers are now looking for a couple more self-employed stylists to join her team…

The best things about her business, Sue says, are the clients. She’s known many of her regulars since she started out and many have become good friends. The hardest part was probably getting all the work within the salon done – but it was well worth it! Sue loves all aspects of her job – although she says she’d love to see perms make a comeback (Ooh, me too Sue, me too) and even teaches hairdressing.

Sue Whispers

Sue LOVES Cheadle Hulme and has lived here all her life. She went to school at Thorn Grove and then Cheadle Hulme High School – or Woods Lane as it was then known – and still lives across the road from her Mum who is still in Sue’s childhood home. A lady after my own heart! Her own children followed her to Thorn Grove and Cheadle Hulme High – it says a lot about our local schools that so many parents really want their children to attend the same schools they did.

Would Sue change anything about Cheadle Hulme? Like so many of us, Sue would like to see more small, independent shops – both in the precinct and along Station Road. The more Cheadle Hulme continues to improve and be a sought-after village to live in, the more shops will want to open here. It’s up to us to support the ones we have and any new ones opening. Just something else to LOVE about Cheadle Hulme!
