Oak Tree Primary Finally Buys Their Greenhouse
11 Apr 2018Primary school gardening team finally buys their greenhouse. The Year 6 Gardening Club at Oak Tree Primary School has raised enough funds to purchase a greenhouse, and are holding the grand opening on Monday, April 16, 2018.
The greenhouse has been placed in the Year 6 Garden, which is a reclaimed area of abandoned school land that the Year 6 children have cultivated and landscaped over the last two years.
The new Year 6 Greenhouse means the club will be able to expand their gardening skills and work towards achieving their RHS School Gardening Award Level 3. The gardening club has already achieved Levels 1 and 2.
One Year 6 child and Gardening Club member, Amy, said,
“Having the Year 6 Garden is the best thing about being at Oak Tree Primary School. We all love it!”
Purchasing the greenhouse was made possible thanks to the support of Oak Tree’s school community. The gardening club held a ‘seed sale’ fundraiser earlier in the year, where they sold sunflower seeds harvested from the Year 6 Garden’s sunflowers at the school fairs. The school PTA also made a donation towards the cost of the greenhouse.
Mr White and Mr Holt, Year 6 class teachers, said,
“The Year 6 Garden has been an amazing project and we love seeing the children plant, harvest, and maintain their own garden. Having the greenhouse is going to take the Year 6 Garden to the next level, and we’d like to thank everyone who has supported the cause so far.”
On Monday, April 16, Oak Tree will hold the official unveiling of the Year 6 Greenhouse and the ribbon will be cut at a special event at 1:30pm
About the Year 6 Garden
After last year’s cohort completed their SATs (key stage 2 tests, held annually in May), school teachers Mr White and Mr Holt gave each child a sunflower seed to plant. Soon, the sunflowers outgrew the classroom and an outdoor planting space was required. Using reclaimed pieces of wood, the Year 6 team built a raised bed, then another, and then a couple more!
Fruit and vegetables including beans, peas, tomatoes, cabbage, sprouts, corn, and much more have all been grown in the garden and harvested by the Year 6 children. A water recycling system, which collects rainwater and funnels it into a couple of water butts, was also added to the garden last year.
The Year 6 Garden is an independent project and does not receive school funding.
