The Chiverton Tap is a micro-pub with a BIG heart.

3 Jul 2020

In fact, the square footage is the only part of the Chiv that could be described as small. Could that all be about to change? Welcome to the Chiverton Tap – Next Level. Still a hub of the Cheadle Hulme community and still aiming to be a pub ‘where everybody knows your name’, the Chiverton Tap is going up a level.

Going Up in the World

Already something of a Tardis with the clever use of space, Mary and Bob have gone upstairs. The development of the first floor has been planned a couple of years and the work began in earnest last year. More room and more tables will be a game-changer for the Chiv. Loyal regulars need not worry, though – everything else will stay just the same. The same local ethos, the same customer service and same great beers. And not just beers, but also vodkas, gins, rums plus an impressive and comprehensive wine list. Most of the drinks available at the Chiv are from small, often North-West-based producers and now brewers approach the Chiv, looking to be featured on the door.

Room with a View

The Chiv Next Level has been beautifully finished and decorated, in a style to complement downstairs. In the same vein, quirky additions and reclaimed treasures add warmth and character – and a little bit of history. Beautifully bespoke stained-glass pieces enhance the natural light that floods in. Also, thanks to a clever space joining the first floor to the existing bar area, the warm, community atmosphere and ‘local’ feel will permeate through the whole pub. The new space will mean there will be plenty of room – and a customary big Chiv welcome – for events, clubs, gatherings and community meetings.

What’s Yours?

As with every other aspect of the Chiv, Mary and Bob are open to suggestions and would LOVE to hear your ideas for the new upstairs. What would you like to see there? What would you like to do? Tasting nights, book clubs or choirs and carol singing? Networking and co-working? Quiz nights? This lends a whole new meaning to the question ‘what’s yours?’

Another new addition is a beautiful back terrace. More reminiscent of Mediterranean tavernas than Mellor Road, this little sun trap is the perfect place to while away the hours.

Belated Birthday

It’s now over five years since Mary and Bob realised their dream and opened the door to the Chiverton Tap for the very first time. Sadly, that birthday went by in lockdown. There had been a fabulous party planned, which had to be furloughed, but, when things get easier, the occasion will surely be celebrated in style.

“Five years ago today, yes FIVE, we opened our doors to the Cheadle Hulme public. We dared to dream, and YOU made it reality. So we couldn’t let the day go by without thanking each and every one of you who have passed through our portal, had a drink; scoffed a pie; had a chat with a stranger; met up with friends; shared a laugh with the bar staff; brought your doggy best mate in; had a quiet Sunday pint with the paper; shared a noisy board game; sneaked a snooze in the corner or spent most of your visit trying to work out where the heck our toilet door is!

Every success we’ve ever had is due in no small part to all of you, so we thank you, from the bottom of our barrels, for making our little dream the best reality.
In case you’ve missed us, we’ve shared our special fifth anniversary album on our Facebook page for you all to enjoy the memories. Please share yours with us. We’d love to see your own favourite snaps from your Chiv visits.

We look forward to making new memories very soon.”

A New Normal

As everyone looks forward to reopening, albeit with restrictions and a strange new normal, the Chiverton Tap team will be doing everything they can to keep the Chiv your happy place. This perfectly proportioned pub has never just been about serving alcohol. The Chiv has always been about the experience, the service, the customers and the atmosphere. This is somewhere you’re welcome to have a quiet pint alone with the dog and a daily paper; congregate round a table with friends; call in early doors or pop in for last orders.

Welcome Home

As with all the best local village pubs, this is somewhere you’re welcome, full stop. Things will be different for a while, that’s for sure, but the welcome won’t be. As Mary and Bob say:

“Re-creating that ambience under current restrictions is a challenge, but we are determined to rise to it. We have spent the last few weeks doing essential jobs, changing things around a little to keep everyone safe, but also ensuring that your pub experience is as fulfilling as ever. Keep watching for updates. We are straining at the leash and as soon as the gun goes off, we’ll be back.”

We can’t wait and look forward to meeting friends and making new ones with the Chiverton Tap once more.
